October 2nd 08

With all the rain we have been having there has been several paddlers enjoy a few runs on the Avon River. A little bit unusual for this time of year but everything seems to be changing. The river could be hovering around that 0.5 - 0.65 this weekend if the rain continues to go inland. So whilst some paddlers are battling it out in the Island to Island Race at Ascot on Sunday, others down south ski practising for the Anaconda Race, there will be many paddling in the white water, which we don't often have the opportunity to do in October.

I have the start of a cold at the moment, so I'm not quite sure what I will be doing this weekend.

Did you paddle on Monday, the Queens birthday. It was absolutely perfect weather for paddling. It couldn't get better than that. This time of year is one of the best times to paddle, not too hot and not too cold. Get out there..

Many of the paddling community were at Lawrence Greed’s 50th birthday party on Saturday night. (He’s catching me up only 7 years behind. I think we should invest in an old paddlers nursing home.) Whilst paddlers danced and talked away the night, Lawrence's wife Anita had prepared a huge food spread. It was a good night.

Lawrence is always happy to show new paddlers the correct paddling technique. You often see him at the club with a paddle in his hand, paddling through the air showing others how it is done. After beating in last weeks race I think he should concentrate on putting it in the water, rather than paddling on dry land, he might just become stronger.

Checking out the rapids on the Athabasca River. The rapids look small but there were some big holes and huge waves when paddling them. Tony & I portaged one grade 5 but paddled all the grade 3 & 4s. When we were paddling in the wilderness in a fully loaded canoe we had to take more care and have more respect for the white water.

Rock formations downstream of the Grand Rapid. For the next 150kms there were several grade 3 & 4 rapids.

Epic V10 Skis

The Epic V10 is incredibly fast and agile while maintaining comfortable stability. While the goal was to design a boat that was faster than the competition on flat water, the Epic V10 really shines in downwind and upwind heavy sea conditions. It’s certainly a leader in its field and paddlers are flocking to this ski in their droves.

A fully adjustable footbrace combines with a high capacity venturi drain to keep water out. The single footwell and front deck cutaway allows for a closer, more powerful stroke. The adjustable footbrace with self adjusting pedals will accommodate paddlers from 5'3" to 6'7" in height. Smaller paddlers will be better served with our V10L surf ski.

Weight: Club Construction (Fibreglass) 17 kg.
Performance Construction 15 kg.
Ultra Construction 11.5 kg.
Length: 6.5 m (21'4
Width: 43.5 cm (17-1/8

Excalibur (Paddling Perfection)

This long and sleek kayak the Excalibur is used in New Zealand’s ultra-rough ‘Coast to Coast’ annual race across the South Island, the yearly ‘Motu Challenge’ in the North Island, and many other multi-sport events in NZ and Australia. It is the kayak for competition at the highest level.
The Excalibur handles flat water easily and is very good, in the right hands on less technical white-water rivers, and rough open waters. Its proven hull shape has helped create winners. The kayak is light and manoeuvrable yet offers good stability and great speed.

Suitable for larger paddlers.
