Saturday Morning Training

Don't miss it, it's fun

7.30am Saturday

T2 worked hard on Saturday morning in his plastic multisport but he failed to get over the line before John Breed in his Kevlar Excalibur. T2, 3 seconds behind did managed to beat Alan Moreby by 5 seconds who was in his Excalibur.

Sharon who loves her new GT Aero is getting more competitive every time she goes out. Sharon has now started to give Jan a run for her money. It’s all good fun and good fitness training.

Dave Boldy tried the new PRS ski. He found it to be very fast so he bought one straight away. Apparently he holds some of the long plastic records and last week he lost one of them when Kevin won the Island to Island Race in a PRS and broke the record by several minutes. He now hopes to change that. He will be racing on Sunday after a weeks rest in Sydney.

The winner of this weeks Saturday morning $50.00 gift voucher draw is Martyn Theobold.

SAD NEWS
Surf Ski Champ's Disappearance (Victoria)

Mr Scheen's competition surf ski was found on Monday smashed against the base of cliffs in an inlet only metres from where he launched.

A life vest was found nearby. The following day his hat was found 150 metres out to sea and his mobile phone washed up on the beach.

Tourists reported seeing him being buffeted by waves as he made his way out past the headland at Murnanes Bay about 12.30pm Monday, intending to paddle the 20 kilometres to Peterborough.

New Ski Paddlers - Be Careful

We are selling a lot more skis to people wanting to take part in the adventure races. Although most paddlers can paddle them in the river when they hit the rough stuff they struggle and often capsize. Before taking part in these ocean races ensure that you have the skills to do so.

Remember: Always wear a PFD. - To get used to rough conditions train in some rough water in the river where you won’t get swept out to sea. - Remember if you fall off your ski and it is windy it can easily blow away from you, leaving you stranded. - If the ski is unstable and you fall off you can quickly tire and not have the energy to get back on.

It is important to have a good support stroke so if you haven’t got one start practicing or enroll in one of our individual lessons.

Also Guy runs courses for adventure racing so if you want to build on your skills, give us a call.

Just be careful out there.....

Epic Skis are one of the best racing skis for ocean racing. Give us a call.

A Paddle On the Wild Side

A Novice Paddler taking his new boat out for a spin at Rottnest Island -

An afternoon paddle turned into a fight for survival. On a maiden voyage from Thomson Bay to nearby Longreach Bay he was quickly swept out to sea by strong south-west winds and a big swell.

Wearing only shorts and T shirt he was tossed around in extremely cold conditions for 4.5 hours. His family were on Rottnest Island with the police searching for him.

Meanwhile cramped, sore and suffering from hypothermia he eventually hit the shores of the mainland, over 20kms later, at Floreat Beach at 5pm.

**********************

Can you imagine what would have happened if strong winds were blowing off-shore, he would be in the Antarctic by now.

We all make errors when we take up a new sport. Most of us put it down to experience and learn from our mistakes and become more responsible. Occasionally though they end in fatal consequences.

I always have a nagging feeling when I sell a boat that one of my customers will not be as sensible as they should and take a kayak into a situation that could endanger their life. Thankfully this wasn’t one of our customers.

We try to give advice, we offer a free lesson and offer other training but it really does come down to each individual buying a boat to assess the situation and make sure that their skill level is up to relevant water conditions.

So when you go out next, just be sure that your skill level is appropriately matched to the water conditions. Think seriously about what you are doing.

If you ever need advice, just call me on 9378 1333

***********************************************

I met local Perth paddler Josh Singleton, left and Canadian Dave Gemmell whilst in the middle of no-where walking/portaging a 25km stretch of grade 4 & 5 whitewater on the Slave River, near the small town of Fort Smith, North West Territories. Josh was on a weeks stay with Dave and were on their way to paddle some of the big rapids. It was one of those once in a million chances of meeting up.

Saturday Training

I only expected a few paddlers at the Saturday morning training considering it was the first day back but to my surprise 18 paddlers turned up. It was good to see Sharon in her new fibreglass GT Aero TK1 and Jan come down and show the guys that kayaking is just not for the men.

Saturday morning training is not only a good excuse to get fitter but you meet some great people who really enjoy kayaking. No egos, just plain fun and enjoyment mixed in with a little competition.

For all those paddlers who have just bought a kayak/ski and would like to get fitter and have some fun, why not come down.

Training starts 7.30am prompt.
Essential to bring your PFD

Saturday Training - Anyone Can Be A Winner

Every week we will be drawing out a winner who will receive a $50.00 gift voucher. It will go to paddlers paddling plastic boats or ladies in plastic or fibreglass boats. There will also be second and third consolation prizes.

To go into the draw for the paddle you must have taken part in at least 6 Saturday morning sessions leading up to Christmas

$50.00 gift voucher Patrick's A Winner
The winner of the first $50.00 gift voucher is Patrick Irwin. Patrick an architect by profession, started paddling in a Finn kayak. He has been part of CDU training for several years and I well remember Patrick’s first days on white water!!!!!!! To see the improvement and the enjoyment he has received from kayaking gives me such a sense of satisfaction.. He now paddles a Down River Kayak, a Wave Hopper and a Low Deck Wizard or anything he can get his hands on.

Second prize went to Steve Wall who wins a T shirt or cap.
Third prize went to Jan Gatt who wins a cap.

Island To Island Race

I wasn’t sure that I should have been taking part in the race being a pathetic man and having a slight cold but I just couldn’t resist. To make it easier I decided to paddle a K2 with Alaine. I expected that she would do all the hard work, let me lay back and allow me to have an easy time (just like she did on the Mackenzie).

After the first kilometre I realised that I couldn’t relax. Beside us was the team of mother and daughter, Jaymee and Andree Martin. Mum hadn’t paddled in a race before and they were by our sides and looking very relaxed too I might add. I wanted to hide, pretend we weren’t there or at least hope that they would capsize (such a sporting thought).

Thankfully after another 2kms they were following our tail and as we got to the half way mark they had no chance of overtaking us unless we fell in which we nearly did when a kayak ran into us. With those two girls now behind I could relax or so I thought, but there were two other girls (Samantha Pilton and Yo Joubert) in singles a few hundred metres in front, so I couldn’t possibly relax and get beaten by girls. Then, to make matters worse, ‘old’ Dave Tupling passed us.

With the shallows and beauty of Ascot Waters behind, and Alaine asking if we were actually racing, it became time to stop thinking that I may drop dead if I push too hard and start putting in some effort to show others that I was a man of conviction. Within moments after putting in more powerful strokes the boat started to inch forward and I could see that we were soon gaining on Samantha and Dave. In no time we slid between them and left them in our wake. Yo was a few hundred metres further ahead and it was my goal to pass her before the end.

As we reached Courtney Island we started to pass Yo but she hung on and it wasn’t until we nearly capsized, caused by Alaine shifting her backside that we managed to get by her. As we crossed the line we were pretty pleased with the latter half of our race and I was more than
pleased that I hadn’t collapsed from my little cold!!

***********************************************

PRS Racing Ski at the Island to Island

I asked Mick Mantell if he wanted to use our demo plastic PRS ski in the Island to Island Race but he decided it wouldn’t be fair to win the race on a longer ski. So he declined. I then offered it to a relatively newcomer, Kevin Waugh to race. He went for a quick spin, liked it so off he went. Consequently he won the long plastic division by 3 minutes beating several other very good paddlers. He now holds the record. He beat Mick by 4.17 minutes, who came 4th overall.

Everyone who has tried this ski just loves it.

***********************************************

Wednesday race at Ascot was a little depressing this week. There were 3 other mixed K2s in our grid and another one that went in the earlier grid. Lawrence and Sam who we beat two weeks ago took this weeks race a little more serious and paddled the fastest K2 available. The only chance that we had in beating them was the hope that they would fall in, which didn't happen and they beat us convincingly. Lawrence and Sam were gloating at the end.

Then there was Grant and little Julie who took off and were never to be seen again by any of the K2s. They went so fast and you couldn't even see Julie in the back. So our only hope of not coming last was to beat Danny and Helen but they managed to get of T2s wash and we could only see them fading into the sunset. The worse thing was, I couldn't blame Alaine for our disappointing run as it was me that was fidgeting and coughing...Bugger! But there is always next time. We are just going to have to encourage other mixed doubles to take part though we have to ensure that they'll be slower than us.

The Spot Locator

I like promoting products that I believe in. This week, I’d like to introduce the Spot Personal Locator. This is a safety device that works exceedingly well and is within most people’s budget.

I used this product on my latest wilderness expedition in Canada. At the end of each day as I was setting up camp, I would turn the locator on and a message would be sent to a mobile phone or to an email address which would let family and friends know where I was every night. It also allowed them to check my position on Google earth.

The information below is how SPOT explains the device:-

Share your adventure with SPOT – the world’s first satellite messenger. SPOT’s unique tracking system allows you to leave a bread crumb trail where ever you are on the globe. SPOT uses GPS to calculate your exact whereabouts. You can send a message to a recipient via an email or text message or even an emergency service notification from anywhere on the globe. Weighing under 1kg, the SPOT messenger can fit into a backpack or into a pocket.

Check in. With SPOT you can activate the Check In function that enables an exact GPS calculation of your location whilst also sending a SMS text or email with your message and coordinates to friends and family with access to you account information.

Track Progress. By sending a blip out every ten minutes you can check in with
friends and family and chart your progress in real time with Google Maps™.
Waypoints and entire routes can also be saved and viewed at a later date. To
activate the Track service, an additional subscription applies.

Help can be called in a non-life threatening situation with just the press of a button on the SPOT messenger. When activated, the Help message is broadcast with GPS accuracy every five minutes for one hour or until cancelled. Your contacts will receive an SMS text message including coordinates, or an email with a link to Google Maps™ showing your exact location. 911. In a life threatening situation SPOT’s 911 emergency button will notify the public and private responders of your location along with your personal information when activated. The appropriate agencies for each region, country and for your location will be alerted when the signal is set off – these may include local police, SES or the Coast Guard.

October 2nd 08

With all the rain we have been having there has been several paddlers enjoy a few runs on the Avon River. A little bit unusual for this time of year but everything seems to be changing. The river could be hovering around that 0.5 - 0.65 this weekend if the rain continues to go inland. So whilst some paddlers are battling it out in the Island to Island Race at Ascot on Sunday, others down south ski practising for the Anaconda Race, there will be many paddling in the white water, which we don't often have the opportunity to do in October.

I have the start of a cold at the moment, so I'm not quite sure what I will be doing this weekend.

Did you paddle on Monday, the Queens birthday. It was absolutely perfect weather for paddling. It couldn't get better than that. This time of year is one of the best times to paddle, not too hot and not too cold. Get out there..

*****************************
Many of the paddling community were at Lawrence Greed’s 50th birthday party on Saturday night. (He’s catching me up only 7 years behind. I think we should invest in an old paddlers nursing home.) Whilst paddlers danced and talked away the night, Lawrence's wife Anita had prepared a huge food spread. It was a good night.

Lawrence is always happy to show new paddlers the correct paddling technique. You often see him at the club with a paddle in his hand, paddling through the air showing others how it is done. After beating in last weeks race I think he should concentrate on putting it in the water, rather than paddling on dry land, he might just become stronger.

FITNESS TRAINING starts Saturday

Back to Plastics but Fibreglass boats are welcome too.......
Our Saturday morning fitness training will start on Saturday 4th, 7.30am start at Sandy Beach Reserve. $5.00 a session. We are going to promote plastic boats. So everyone who paddles a plastic boat will go into the draw for a $50.00 gift voucher. Winner or loser you have the same chance to win.

ALL PADDLERS MUST WEAR A PFD

Steve Pilton will be running most of the sessions with myself taking over when he can’t make it. We start this Saturday 4th October.

Checking out the rapids on the Athabasca River. The rapids look small but there were some big holes and huge waves when paddling them. Tony & I portaged one grade 5 but paddled all the grade 3 & 4s. When we were paddling in the wilderness in a fully loaded canoe we had to take more care and have more respect for the white water.

Rock formations downstream of the Grand Rapid. For the next 150kms there were several grade 3 & 4 rapids.

The new Performance Racing Ski

Epic V10 Skis

The Epic V10 is incredibly fast and agile while maintaining comfortable stability. While the goal was to design a boat that was faster than the competition on flat water, the Epic V10 really shines in downwind and upwind heavy sea conditions. It’s certainly a leader in its field and paddlers are flocking to this ski in their droves.

A fully adjustable footbrace combines with a high capacity venturi drain to keep water out. The single footwell and front deck cutaway allows for a closer, more powerful stroke. The adjustable footbrace with self adjusting pedals will accommodate paddlers from 5'3" to 6'7" in height. Smaller paddlers will be better served with our V10L surf ski.

Weight: Club Construction (Fibreglass) 17 kg.
Performance Construction 15 kg.
Ultra Construction 11.5 kg.
Length: 6.5 m (21'4
Width: 43.5 cm (17-1/8

Excalibur (Paddling Perfection)

This long and sleek kayak the Excalibur is used in New Zealand’s ultra-rough ‘Coast to Coast’ annual race across the South Island, the yearly ‘Motu Challenge’ in the North Island, and many other multi-sport events in NZ and Australia. It is the kayak for competition at the highest level.
The Excalibur handles flat water easily and is very good, in the right hands on less technical white-water rivers, and rough open waters. Its proven hull shape has helped create winners. The kayak is light and manoeuvrable yet offers good stability and great speed.

Suitable for larger paddlers.

197 Newsletter

Alaine & I haven't paddled down at Ascot for several months, so we decided to paddle our Sprint K2 in the Wednesday night race. At the start of the race we were very wobbly, I think it was because Alaine was shuffling around in the back but she wouldn't admit it. It didn't help that all around us we had wash from two other K2s, two singles and a double ski. Anyway, although placed last at the last turn, we found some clean water and passed Lawrence and Steve’s daughter, Sam. In theory, these two who train all the time should be better than us, but it seems not, we beat them to the finish line and nearly caught Danny and Helen. (Just in case you didn't notice Lawrence - we beat you).

Not a bad comeback after only paddling a stable canoe for the last year. I even had to give 'some' praise to Alaine for paddling so well, which was difficult for me to acknowledge and hurt me a little to admit.

Paddling on one of those cold days above the Arctic Circle.

******************

My mate Lawrence Greed who is having his 50th birthday this weekend used to be my rival. However we hardly race against each other now, until this week that was. I used to beat him in the Avon Descent but one year he was determined to beat me. That year in practise he was streets ahead, being a lot faster than me. In the event however we were very close. As I passed under Tonkin Highway Bridge near the finish, with Garrettt Road and a win in my sights, Lawrence came up from behind like a steam train with plenty of steam left in him.

As he passed me, I didn’t think it fair to jump on his wash because if we were equal over the line I would win, taking into account the first days result. I should have had more sense as I did a silly thing and played fair and didn’t wash hang him. This became my downfall as Lawrence started to pull away from me and eventually beat me over the line. For quite sometime we didn’t know the true result, as I had beat him on the first day. To his delight and my dismay, after two days of racing he beat me by 7 seconds. Can you believe it.......Seven Seconds!!!

Of course since then he frequently reminds me of the time he beat me.

Although I’m not a fan of winning by wash hanging, on that occasion I should have not allowed my principles to get in the way. I can see a message on my grave… I will miss you Terry (PS can you remember when I beat you in the Avon Descent) Your friend Lawrence.

******************
The new Performance Racing Ski

Terry (T2) raced the brand new Spirit Performance Racing Ski last night at the Ascot race. On a 17 minute course he was 1 minute faster than when he is in his lightweight multisport kayak. This means over a race of about 1 hour the new ski is going to be close to 4 minutes faster than all the other long plastics.

Spirit Performance Racing Ski

Ascot Kayak Club member Bernard Hoffmann took the PRS ski for a spin on Saturday and clocked 13 kilometres an hour. He said he thinks he could keep a pace of 11 – 12 kilometres an hour on longer runs.

Several paddlers have now paddled the new ski in the last week and all have been very impressed and thought it to be an excellent boat to paddle.

******************

You can try the surf version now, but if you are wanting an Avon Descent version you may need to put your name down to make sure you don’t have to wait too long after it is released.

With the new ski being so fast, race organisers are in a quandary to what class to put it in. The long plastic class is regarded to be 4.5 metres and above so in theory at the moment it will be in that class. With it being so fast they are now thinking about creating another class.

It is always good to come home, but it is hard to forget the great memories of those weeks on those three rivers in the Canadian wilderness. It is not something that you can forget easily and it's the great memories that drive me on to plan my next expedition. When I return from every expedition I feel refreshed and lively, like a new life is before me. Although, if I stop work I can put in for a seniors card, I feel as young as I did 30 years ago and with my body feeling no pain from the extreme paddling that I do, I can't wait to live life at its fullest over the next 20 years.

The Team: Leonie, Tony, Alaine & Terry above the Arctic Circle.

In the meantime it’s back to work, another past time that I enjoy. As a passionate canoeist owning my own canoe shop is such a rewarding job. It feels good to be able to help other paddlers to either get into the great sport or help those in the sport to enjoy it to its fullest extent.

The good thing about going away is that I forget all about work and I can just get on with enjoying my holiday. Of course in the past it hasn't been possible to leave the shop behind with-out Alaine's support and willingness to look after it whilst I was away. This year she was part of the expedition for 6 weeks, so the shop was left with Terry Brook (T2) to look after. Terry had been working here 18 months part time. With the help of Ken Redwood and our part time staff of Steve Pilton, Natalie DiBono, Erin Myers, Josh Kippin, Adrian Quick and Amelee Oliver, Terry and the team did a fantastic job in keeping the shop going, which I am very appreciative.

In the hope that business will continue to strengthen, Terry (T2) is now working with us full time. Welcome T2.

T2 in training.

A lot of our business has been created by the word-of-mouth, by paddlers such as you. Please continue to tell your friends and workmates about Canoeing Down Under. With all the multi-nationals setting up huge stores and eroding our market place, we do need your support to ensure that we stay in business and that there is a canoeing shop in Perth that will help newcomers choose the right craft, give people the correct information, sponsor events and be there to repair paddles, boats and have gear that supermarket shops will not carry.

Are You Ready For Saturday Morning Fitness Training
With the warmer weather on the way and the fact that some paddlers keep asking when the fitness training is about to start, I was wondering how many paddlers would be interested in the fitness training on a Saturday morning.

The training is for everyone so you don't have to be an expert, just keen to go paddling.
We are thinking about starting it in 3 weeks time. If you are keen please let me know call on 9378 1333.

We have had many 2008 Avon Descenter’s come into the store telling us their stories about this years Avon Descent and the high water. It appears to have been an exciting event. Of course I was on the Mackenzie River at the time having my own fun. It goes to show that the Avon River can still create some excitement.

New Spirit Ski

The New Spirit Surf Ski is now ready to be tested. Although the Avon Descent version still has a few finishing touches to do, the surf version is ready for those paddlers wanting the fastest plastic ski on the market. I had the pleasure to test drive it last week and it was a pleasure; it was just magical to paddle. The narrow bow allowed me to get my paddle in close to the boat. The venturi in the foot-wells sucked out all the water so there was no extra water weight to push through the water, which was great.

You never know I might yet become a ski paddler.

Finn Lightweight Boats

Finn are now making boats with a new plastic that allows them to build a boat several kilograms lighter than what they are at the moment. The lighter boats however will cost another $200.00 but in many cases, it's truly worth it.

Is It Out There!!!

Paddle lent and not returned: "I gave a breakdown paddle to a guy (Anthony, I think) at the bottom of Championships during the Avon this year. It wasn't a great paddle (white bladed paddle, home made cut down to fit in a ski) but was handy as a backup. I asked him to contact me through your email newsletter but I haven't seen anything from him on your newsletter since the race. I was wondering if you could put something in your next newsletter asking him to contact me on j.how@ecu.edu.au. (Race ID 833). Thanks a lot. Cheers, Jason."
